Bull Island is a wild and wonderful space that has provided enjoyment to the residents of its surrounding suburbs and to Dubliners as a whole for generations. Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981 and a National Nature Reserve in 1988, the recent awarding of Blue Flag Status to a section of Dollymount Strand has added significantly to Bull Island's amenity value.
The island can become heavily littered, however, particularly in the sand dunes and other rough terrain, where Dublin City Council's machinery cannot be used. In these circumstances, in order to keep the area clean, the litter that has been dropped, windblown or water-borne must be picked up by hand.
Bull Island Action Group has been active in organising cleanups by volunteers on a regular monthly basis for the past several years. If you are concerned about the environment and want to do something positive about it, join us on the 3rd Saturday of each month and help to make a difference.
