About Conservation Volunteers Galway (CVG)
Conservation Volunteers (Galway) is a 100% voluntary amateur group working on weekends typically once a month doing various practical outdoor tasks for public benefit, such as tree planting, seashore clean-ups, wildflower meadow development and woodland path maintenance. We also collaborate with other similar groups in Galway city and county. Our purpose is to protect our natural heritage whilst providing opportunities for volunteer participation in practical conservation projects.
We assist local authorities, educational institutions and community groups in enhancing, maintaining access to, and promoting awareness of areas with biodiversity value. Our main resource is the energy and enthusiasm of our members who contribute to an enjoyable atmosphere on our workdays, whilst achieving completion of the tasks to be done.
We are autonomous regarding yearly habitat maintenance and cleanup works and we seek guidance from expert authorities such as the NPWS before starting new projects.
Our practical conservation projects protect and enhance some of the most beautiful and interesting green places in Galway City and County. We carry out a wide range of activities such as tree planting, hedge-laying and removal of invasive species. Tools and gloves are supplied for CVG events. On workdays, we go steadily with caution. Sensible outdoor footwear and clothing is advised - Looking forward to seeing you soon.
What's Involved
We undertake practical conservation projects to protect and enhance some of the most beautiful green places in Galway City and County. We carry out a wide range of activities such as tree planting, hedge-laying and removal of invasive species.
Our next activity is on Saturday 22nd, planting more meadow wildflowers into Terryland park, after a demonstration of traditional meadow mowing using scythes there. If you have your own scythe please also feel free to join the cutting team. This event is a continuation of the longterm "Operation Bláthanna" project. Following great interest in last year’s inaugural scythe cutting day, this year’s repeat collaboration with Conservation Volunteers and Cumann na bhFear-men’s shed, is also part of the Galway Fringe Festival. Annual timely mowing is vital to expose wildflower seedlings to sunlight, This location had plenty of pink/purple raged robin flowers earlier during spring/summer which have seeded. Therefore mowing now will ensure next year’s show.
Assembly at 10:30am will be at the quincentenary bridge entrance of the Terryland Forest Park. Access is via the path from behind Currys PC world, or alternatively from the dyke road steps. If you arrive later just walk around the park and you will find us.
In consideration of the obvious hazards during the scythe cutting demonstration. Please ensure you Don’t let loose kids or dogs run about there, and please stay onside with the safety marshals. Also refer to the attached hazard document for other common sense stuff. Sensible outdoor clothing and footwear is advised. Planting tools, tea etc, will be provided.
Go mbeadh sibh ann - Looking forward to seeing you there,
