About Gaisce and Sligo Volunteer Centre

Gaisce-The Presidents Award is the most prestigious award for young people aged 15-25 in the Country. The award is a self directed Personal Development Programme where participants get support and mentorship from a Presidents Award Leader (PAL). There are 4 different areas of activity: *Community Involvement *Personal Skills *Physical Recreation *Adventure Journey There are 3 levels of award - Bronze, Silver and Gold each with a different length of commitment required.

Sligo Volunteer Centre is working in partnership with Gaisce to act as an Gaisce Award Partner. President's Award Leaders (PALs) affiliated with Sligo Volunteer Centre will work with young adults (18 to 25).

What's Involved

The role of the President's Award Leader (PAL) is to mentor young adults aged 18 to 25 who are working towards a Gaisce award.
Full training (1 day) will be provided and PALs will have support from the Gaisce Regional Development Officer as needed.

The main tasks of a PAL are:
1. Motivate, encourage, advise and assist participants in agreeing their activities, on line registration and completion of their Gaisce Award.
2. Support and review participants on their Gaisce Journey with occasional check- ins by phone, email or face to face.

The young adult may take anything from 6 months to several years to complete an award, depending on whether they are working towards a bronze, silver or gold award and what other commitments they have. The PAL's involvement is occasional, mainly by email/text with one or two face to face meetings.

Gaisce PALs have a positive attitude, are encouraging and supportive of young people as they take on new challenges.
They are approachable and able to relate to young people.
They are respective of cultural differences, personal boundaries and social diversity.
